The approach is based on the circle image for trigonometry. If we assume the circle has radius 1, then the vertical and horizontal lines are the sine and cosine values. A key question to prompt, is when will be sine line be ½ (i.e, half the radius). Students will often initially say 45 degrees, which of course is not correct.
